It was a great night! One of the best of our lives. Despite the weather, the lorry carrying the salmon and the other carrying the veg going into the dyke...despite the boat with the flowers bobbing at sea...and the snow which stranded us and others an hour short of Sutton the night before....the evening was a great success. The lorries were rescued. The boat did deliver. We were spared a power cut.

Over 230 of you braved the snow and the ice and wisely disregarded erroneous traffic reports to be there. Many of you showed up early and stayed late....some until 3 or 4a.m...proving we're still young...at heart. It was indeed a night to remember. One we believe made a whole lot of people very happy and gave us all an experience we can hold on to until we're so old we can't remember. My wife Linda will remember it as the night she learned to jive and became part of a community, however briefly, for which she feels great affection.

Thank you all for coming and making the Sutton Flood Reunion a success beyond our wildest dreams. I'd like to think we'll do it again in fifty years time, but alas we'll have to leave it to John Monk's young people to carry on what may in time, become a great tradition

Who Came...

Well, this is who we think came. With a few cancellations due to the weather, and others taking their places at the last minute, it was hard to tell exactly who was there and who was not! We think that with spouses and partners, around 230 of you made it.

From Barbara Clark
In 1953 I was nine. We lived in the Methodist Church Manse on the corner of Park Road East. My father, Rev Cyril Clarke was the Methodist Minister for Sutton and lots of the small villages around. My mother was Constance Clarke. My father was on the Flood Committee. After Sutton my parents worked in Walsall, Newport (South Wales) and then in Hong Hong for many years before retiring to Somerset, near Bath, where they lived happily until well into their 80s. If anyone remembers us - Barbara, Alison and Douglas Clarke, it would be nice to get in touch again. I have just come back from the funeral of Mrs Dorothy Clark. She was married to Michael Clark who was the Headmaster of Sutton Primary School in 1953. They lived opposite us in Park Road East and had, at that stage one baby, Susan, who was just born at the time of the Floods. At Dorothy Clark's funeral I met several people who knew Sutton in 1953. They mentioned the reunion and your website. From the list of people who attended I recognise John Graham. I wish I had known about the reunion, but it is good to read that you had such a great night. Could you post this, or circulate please. Many thanks and best wishes Barbara Clarke
